LONG BEACH – No. 8 Los Alamitos scored six first-quarter touchdowns and cruised to a 49-6 victory over Marina in a Sunset League game at Veterans Stadium on Thursday night.

Junior quarterback Jack Telenko threw for three scores, hitting Connor Iris for a 49-yard touchdown 50 seconds into the game, then connecting with Denzal Brantley from 14 yards out on a short drive set up by a Marina fumble. Late in the first quarter he tossed a 16-yard touchdown pass to Matt Nelson to make it 42-0.

Griffins coach John Barnes called his team’s first-quarter outburst, which included an interception return by Blake Johnson and rushing touchdowns from Brantley and Keynin Charbonnet, “amazing.”

“And we played efficiently, we came out, didn’t make mistakes and did what we were supposed to do. So that’s all good,” Barnes said.

Charbonnet added a second touchdown for Los Alamitos (7-1, 3-0) on an 80-yard drive engineered by backup quarterback Connor Crook.

“That was outstanding,” Barnes said of the drive. “Charbonnet did a great job on it.”

The Vikings (0-8, 0-3) were bottled up for much of the first half by the Griffins’ defense, which held them to four first downs, two coming on a drive midway through the second quarter.

Sophomore Cooper Malerstein ran for 122 yards and a touchdown for the Vikings in the second half, which was played with a running clock. Dominic Gonzalez completed seven of 15 passes for 53 yards in relief of starting quarterback Joey Marino.

Telenko completed five of eight passes for 99 yards and gave way to Crook to start the second quarter. Charbonnet ran for 49 yards.

The Griffins visit Huntington Beach next Friday while Marina plays at Newport Harbor.
