2004 Season

2004 Season: This impressive season will be led by seniors Luis Reyes, Orlando Scandrick, Jeremy Childs, Kyle McCulley, Cortes Rice, John Hale, Jimmy Barnes, Justin Woods, Brian Felling, Andrew Ramirez, Kevin Linehan, Sean Swett, Brian Mihalik, Andrew Paranal, Max Foltz, Nathan Quinn, Tommy Murphy, Brett Martin, Mike Aguayo, Alex Main, and Garrett Lacayo.

The 2004 season began with 38-19 win over Dos Pueblos, the school’s 300th all-time victory.  That set up a much-anticipated showdown with fellow OC power Mission Viejo, ranked No. 2 in the nation. The Griffins scored in the first minute on a Jimmy Barnes to Jeremy Childs pass down the middle, but it was all Diablos from there on as Los Al fell 55-21. But Los Al regrouped with 11 straight wins.  En route the Griffins won their fourth consecutive Sunset League championship.

Cortes Rice set the school’s all-time single-season rushing record (1,882) and tied the season record for rushing touchdowns (23).  Jeremy Childs became Orange County’s all-time career receptions leader (208), Jimmy Barnes set a school single season record for touchdown passes (37), and John Hale set team records for most tackles in a single game (21) and season (115).  But more importantly, the team reached the CIF Division I finals for the second time in three years, this time facing local rival Long Beach Poly.

The Griffins had already downed two of the Moore League’s playoff entrants, beating Cabrillo 42-6 in the opening round and outlasting defense powerhouse Lakewood 14-9 in the semis, before a crowd of 8,000 at East LA College.

Long Beach Poly, again ranked in the top ten nationally, went ahead early on an interception returned for a touchdown by All-American DeSean Jackson, but the Los Al defense was tough, not allowing Poly a first down the rest of the half.

After getting great field position to start the fourth quarter, the offense responded with a Barnes to Orlando Scandrick TD pass.  But a miscue on the PAT hold prevented the tie, and stopped the momentum, and the Jackrabbits went on to post a 21-6 win.
