2003 Season

The 2003 season started with a number two national ranking and a convincing 49-0 win over Culver City.  That was followed by televised rematch with Hart which ended with the Griffins prevailing 20-17 on a late field goal by all-CIF kicker Brooks Rossman.  In the fourth game of the year, a 37-7 win over CIF D6 champ La Habra (which would go on to win the D6 title again), junior quarterback Jimmy Barnes completed a school record 28 completions.  Carson, which would go on to win the LA City title, fell 31-6 in week five.

Barnes threw three TD passes in the league opener win over Edison and Nathan Quinn added a 50 yard interception return for the fourth TD, but Week 7 saw Fountain Valley burst Los Al’s bubble and national ranking with a 21-16 upset win in a game in which fog prevented fans from seeing Los Al’s potential game-winning drive in the final minute come up just short.

However, the Griffins rallied to claim their third Sunset League title in a row and fifth in six years.  Los Al opened the playoffs with a 20-10 win over Santa Margarita as Josh Jones ran for 197 yards, followed by a 42-0 rout of Long Beach Wilson.

The Griffins’ season ended the next week at the new Home Depot Center with a tough semifinal overtime loss to Loyola 22-15 that ended with a terrific goal line stand by the Lions after the Griffins had first and goal at the one-yard line.
