It would’ve been optimistic to expect a more dominant performance from Los Alamitos after its blowout win

It would’ve been optimistic to expect a more dominant performance from Los Alamitos after its blowout win over Canyon last week, but the Griffins may have looked even better Thursday night at Veterans Stadium, dismantling San Juan Hills, 42-7.

“We’re really hitting our stride,” said Los Al head coach John Barnes. “On defense we’re really good, and Jack Telenko is getting better every week. He made some great plays tonight. And you’re gonna have a tough time scoring on our first(-team) defense.”

Telenko, a junior quarterback, threw for over 200 yards and three touchdowns in the first half alone. Including his work on the ground, he ended his night with 275 total yards and four touchdowns.

When asked what was working tonight, Telenko responded: “Everything,” he said, smiling. “Same as last week, we came in expecting nothing but perfection. We got closer as a team and a family tonight. We’re playing really well.”

The Griffins were once again without starting running back Denzal Brantley, who is nursing an injured ankle, but Schuyler Whitehead had a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown and 69 total yards with some physical running. Joe Wysocki led all receivers with four catches for 72 yards, highlighted by a 57-yard touchdown grab on third-and-28 late in the first quarter to put his team ahead 21-0.

Matt Locher was once again a force in the middle of the Griffins’ defense, hurrying Stallions quarterback Patrick O’Brien with blitzes through the middle all night. Locher also ran for a 1-yard score to put Los Al up 35-0 at halftime.

O’Brien was just 5 for 14 for 32 yards, an interception and a lost fumble in the first half, and San Juan Hills mustered just 42 yards on eight first-half drives. The Griffins’ defense forced four turnovers on the night, led by Dickie Brown’s interception and fumble recovery in the second quarter.
